Little bird within your heart
Set a-flutter by that day,
That tore your mind to pieces
And cast a soul upon waves.

You never thought, imagined or believed,
That you would feel this way
When no matter how many stand near you
You feel alone and far away.

In the turbulent winds that are your emotions,
You are violently shaken and thrown
And upon the sea of uncertainty,
You will finally start sailing home.

Until eyes shut tight are opened,
And the sunlight shines straight through.
To reveal a world of new chances,
And new strengths that belong to you.

I envy you, dear friend,
For the battle you have fought.
For the emotions you alone had burdened,
And finding the hope that you have sought.

And as you stand, one of many,
Upon this quiet shore.
Stare back at the waves and have faith,
The one day we will win the war.

A poem inspired by those who have fought, or are still fighting, the battle that is breast cancer.

For the Think Pink III contest, literature section

I don't think I need to say how much I support the idea of creating awareness and supporting the battle for awareness and a cure.

- - - - -

I wrote this from the perspective of someone who observes the strength in their battling friend. Because, seriously, unless you have been through it one cannot fathom the emotional and physical pain someone fighting cancer goes through.

Instead it is written as someone who watches and sees the changes in their friend, from the horror of finding out, to the harships of treatment and onto the uncertainty of the future. They can only guess with love and care what their dear friend is going through.

My aunty is just getting over her last treatment of breast cancer. She's such a fighter. Beautiful poem :)

I cannot believe how strong people must be to face a challenge like that.

Yeah, she's something. In the worst times you realise how strong you can be :)

It is a courage that so many cannot find in just every-day life, yet seems to come to the fore when confronted by true crisis. We humans are an interesting paradox.
